So hi, I’m new! I will probably post about arts and crafts all the time…maybe my own work, maybe patterns, maybe fun things I find on teh internets, who knows! I like knitting, fabric, wool, crochet, sewing, puppets, felt, rug hooking, etc.

Fake plastic bills
by Jaf on Mar.07, 2010, under Updates
Canadians reel today in the sudden and unexpected news that their currency will no longer be printed on standard cotton-paper issue. Instead, Canadian currency will now be released in a medium fit for the modern world – plastic. This is believed to be the result of a mistaken presupposition that world petroleum resources aren’t finite. #Goodtimes reporters hit the streets this morning, but the only thing on any Canadian’s lips was, ‘WTF. What about the Spock Fives?!’
Word choice
by Jaf on Mar.05, 2010, under Updates
On the latest episode of Republic of Doyle, a character was insulted by being called “retarded”. This sent a friend of mine involved in disability advocacy into action, demanding an apology.
The whole fiasco reminded me of an occurrence back in ‘97 when Newfies were referred to as stupid on an episode of Ellen. That incident caused a bit of a shitstorm in our local media and certainly had us Islanders talking. People don’t like to be insulted.
I find myself rather torn on this issue. I recognize the power that words and labeling can have over people, especially minority groups, and I certainly see the need for social responsibility from public figures (writers included). But…is censorship in the form of further government regulation of the arts just another problem masquerading as a solution?
Sometimes all you’ve got are bad choices.
Apple Steaming Up?
by Gray on Mar.04, 2010, under Gaming
Warning: gamer geeks only! Excitement should be brewing for a possible Mac version of Steam after Valve has begun teasing us with strange little bits of evidence. For any Mac user who boots into Windows to play games, this will be quite a relief…it’s possible you may soon be playing Team Fortress 2 in OS X! Well, maybe. If Steam does hit the Mac platform, will it just support games already ported to Mac, or will it wrap all the Steam library inside Cider packages?
It’s still very possible that Valve is just teasing the Mac users with a magical shiny carrot, hoping to lead us into a ditch and beat us senseless with a PC & a copy of Portal 2. Only time will tell, for now you can hit the jump to see the strange Apple-esque pictures Valve has been sending out to gaming sites this week, they speak for themselves.

Top 10: Fictional Drugs
by Door on Mar.03, 2010, under Random Thoughts
While there is very clearly an arsenal of drugs already at humankind’s fingertips, here as in most other domains, the future and pure fiction both boast a certain allure. The following list constitutes one beholder’s Top 10: Fictional Drugs. Feel free to disagree
Republic of Doyle: Round Two
by Jaf on Mar.02, 2010, under Pop Culture, Updates
Just a quick update to inform you that CBC has agreed to buy another season of RoD. This is good news because it makes everyone on my FB newsfeed super happy. Plus, I take great pleasure in spotting people I know appearing as background characters…in fact, I think this may well have all the components of a drinking game. *Looks at Gray…*
So, let’s enjoy the last half dozen episodes of this round and see if we can’t help Jake figure out who killed Laura Palmer.
Donairs
by Jaf on Mar.02, 2010, under Random Thoughts
Inspired by Drew’s comment on Corey’s last post.
I didn’t realize growing up that donairs were unique to the east coast. While living in Halifax, I remember seeing “home of the original donair” on restaurant signs, but I didn’t explore the statement’s accuracy. Since living in Toronto and failing to find donairs, I’ve come to know they barely reach this far west. The few places that do sell them, sell them as “Halifax style donairs” and don’t do them justice. That said, if you are in Toronto and craving a donair, I’ve given College Falafel at the intersection of College and Ossington a passing grade. It is kind of like having a well replicated Romulan ale – it’s pretty close to Romulan ale, but still…you know it isn’t exactly authentic.
